Today, we had the honor of documenting the Children’s Memorial Flag-Raising with the Memphis Child Advocacy Center, held at the Vasco A. Smith Shelby County Administration Building in Downtown Memphis. It was a meaningful gathering that brought our community together in remembrance, reflection, and awareness for the children we have lost to abuse or neglect.

A Moment to Pause
There was something especially powerful in the rhythm of the ceremony. The Memphis Police Department Color Guard marched toward the flagpole and raised the Children's Memorial flag. Following, the names of the three children were read aloud.
Kevin Horton (3 YO)
Ashaira Walker (5 YO)
Ke'Darius Wardlow (8 YO)
A carillon hand bell then rang, followed by the release of a dove for each child.

Each dove rose gently into the sky, followed by the release of multiple doves in honor of all the children lost.

A Community Showing Up
The space was filled with leaders, advocates, and community members including , Mayor Paul Young, Rabbi Micah Greenstein, MPD Color Guard, and more.

April marks National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time centered on awareness, education, and action.
Today reminded me that awareness begins with presence — showing up, listening, and standing behind the important work organizations like the Memphis Child Advocacy Center do every day.

We’re always thankful to document moments like these, and being trusted to capture those moments is something we carry with care.
